Common Septic System Problems

Common Septic System Problems

As soon as you suspect a problem with your septic system, you'll want to have an inspection done by a plumber who specializes in septic services. By acting quickly, you'll have the best chance to prevent the problem from worsening and causing a major problem on your property. At Champion Plumbing, our crew provides expertise with septic system repairs and pumping. Don't hesitate to give us a call when you notice an issue with your septic system.

Common Causes of Septic System Trouble

One common septic system problem is that there is blockage in the inlet baffle. By simply looking through the inlet baffle opening, you may be able to tell if there's something causing a clog. If toilet paper or something else is clogging the baffle into your tank, you might be able to fish it out yourself. But the clog seems more serious---or you just don't want to deal with it---then you can call us up and we'll quickly take care of it.

Clogs at the outlet baffle or effluent filter could potentially cause sewage to back up into your home. Obviously, such clogs should be dealt with ASAP. By cleaning your effluent filter each year, you can reduce the risk of such trouble.

Another common problem is that there's a clog in the pipe that goes from the house to the tank. This could happen if somebody flushes something down the tank other than human waste or toilet paper. Slow draining is a sign of this issue. By snaking the line, a plumber can usually take care of this in not much time.

You'll also want to watch out for signs of a failing drainfield, which could cause sewage to back up into your home. A common sign that the drainfield is failing is that grass has become quite spongy. A failing drainfield may mean that you need to use a new location for your drainfield.

Also, it's fairly common for septic systems to fail because they were poorly designed or installed. You may need your system to be redone if it was installed at an incorrect grade or in impermeable soil.
